How to Choose a Mahjong Set: Tile Count, Size, Racks and Case Compared
Links marked (paid link) go to Amazon. We have not tested these products; this page compares listed specifications only.
Choose the style first, then count. An American (NMJL) game needs at least 152 tiles including 8 jokers, plus 4 racks; a Chinese or Hong Kong game needs 144 tiles and no jokers. After that, check that the tile size fits your racks and that the contents list adds up.
Most buying mistakes come from skipping that first step. A beautiful 144-tile set can't play American rules without extra jokers, and an American set carries 14 or more tiles a Hong Kong table will never use.

Which tile count does your game need?
| You play | Tiles you need | Jokers | Racks | Also buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American (NMJL) | 152 in play; 166 in the box is typical | 8 (10 gives 2 spares) | 4, usually with pushers | This year's NMJL card, 1 per player, sold by the League |
| Chinese / Hong Kong | 144 (136 if you skip flowers) | None | Optional | Nothing else required |
| Japanese riichi | 136, often with red 5s | None | Not used; point sticks instead | Point sticks |
| Both American and Hong Kong | An American set: remove jokers and spares for Hong Kong | 8 | 4 | NMJL card |
Our tile count page lists what belongs in each count, category by category, so you can check any contents list against it before you buy.
Will the tiles fit your racks?
American racks are built to hold your tiles and to push a wall of 19 stacks onto the table. A quick check: multiply the tile width by 19 and compare it with the rack's listed inside length.
| Listed tile width | 19 tiles side by side |
|---|---|
| 7/8 in. (0.875) | 16.6 in. |
| 0.9 in. | 17.1 in. |
| 1.0 in. | 19.0 in. |
| 1.1 in. | 20.9 in. |
Two American sets on sale in 2026 list tiles of 1 1/8 x 7/8 x 1/2 in. and 1.2 x 0.9 x 0.5 in., so a rack sized for 17 in. of tiles suits both. Large-print tiles are often wider. If a listing doesn't give tile width and rack length, ask before you buy. Our tile size guide compares standard, large and jumbo tiles.
What are mahjong tiles made of?
We can compare what listings state, not how a material feels in the hand, so the table below sticks to the facts a seller has to print on the listing.
| Material | Where you'll see it | What to check on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| Melamine | Most new American and Chinese sets | Engraved and painted faces last longer than printed ones |
| Acrylic or resin | Colored and clear designer sets | Whether faces are engraved; whether it's sold as a full 152-tile playing set or as decor |
| Bone and bamboo, Bakelite, Catalin | Vintage sets, mostly 1920s to 1960s | Tile count (old sets often lack jokers) and whether every tile is present |
Vintage sets have their own checks. Our page on mahjong tile materials shows how to tell them apart.
What should be in the box?
Use this list against the listing's "set includes" section. A missing line item isn't a deal-breaker, but you should know which pieces you'll be buying separately before the first game night.
| Item | American set | Chinese / HK set |
|---|---|---|
| Suit tiles: 3 suits x 9 ranks x 4 | 108 | 108 |
| Winds 16, dragons 12 | 28 | 28 |
| Flowers and seasons | 8 needed (16 often included) | 8 |
| Jokers | 8 needed (10 often included) | None |
| Blank spares | Useful | Useful |
| Racks with pushers | 4 | Optional |
| Dice | 2 or 3 | 2 or 3 |
| Wind indicator | Useful for tracking East | Useful |
| Case | Hard case or soft bag | Any |
| NMJL card | Not included; bought yearly from the League | Not used |
Worked check. A listing says "166 tiles: 36 dots, 36 bams, 36 craks, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 16 flowers, 10 jokers, 4 blanks." Add it: 108 + 16 + 12 + 16 + 10 + 4 = 166. You'll play with 152 of them: all 108 suit tiles, 28 honors, 8 flowers and 8 jokers. The other 14 are spares.
Why do American sets cost more than Chinese sets?
Count what's in the box. A typical American set has 166 tiles against 144, and it usually includes 4 racks with pushers, which a Chinese set often leaves out. Jokers and the Arabic-numeral corner marks that match the NMJL card are made for the American market only, so a Chinese set can't simply be relabeled and sold as one. The NMJL card is a separate yearly purchase on top of the set.
Which set suits your situation?
| Situation | Look for | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| New to an American group | 166 tiles, 10 jokers, 4 racks with pushers, Arabic numerals on tiles | Sets listed as "Chinese" or "144 tiles" |
| Family Hong Kong games | 144 tiles, readable corner numbers, hard case | Racks and jokers you won't use |
| Travel | Smaller tiles, soft case, total weight on the listing | Wooden racks |
| Players who want larger print | Tile width and rack length both listed; check the 19-tile sum above | Large tiles with standard racks unless the seller confirms fit |
Sets to compare by specification
Each group below holds at most 3 listings, chosen because the listed specifications match the checks above. Product names, links and images load from Amazon's API when the page is built, and until then each slot shows the specs to match.
